6 December 1999 Public Hearing Item 15

JAN PACHUL Item/article #15 (199812524)

1. I am writing to you regarding CRTC Application # 199812524 by JAN PACHUL, 204 Main Street, Toronto. A copy of this letter has NOT been sent to the applicant.

2. I wish to express my support for this application. It is my opinion that there is far too great a degree of corporate domination of Canadian media, and that this domination leads to a lower quality and a lower standard of journalism and news reporting. For example, a newspaper or TV news program might refuse to run a particular story out of fear that it may offend major advertisers in that newspaper or station. Yet a community-based television station, such as the one Mr. Pachul proposes, would not be beholden to the interests of corporations, since Mr. Pachul proposes to target advertisers with 5 or fewer employees. The proposed station would therefore provide a more accurate newscast than is currently available on other, larger TV stations.

3. Furthermore, Mr. Pachul's application details plans to incorporate a degree of viewer interactivity into the proposed station. I feel that this interactivity would be on a far more intense scale than any interactivity provided by major TV stations, since Mr. Pachul's proposed station is community-based, and therefore more accessible (since it encompasses a smaller geographic area).

4. I ask the Commission to approve Mr. Pachul's application. A community-based, community-oriented television station would be of great service to the people of East Toronto.

Will Taylor
