East Toronto residents and businesses are closer to having their own
television station with the announcement by the Canadian Radio-television
and Telecommunications Commission that it will consider the application by
Jan Pachul for a community station on UHF channel 15 at a public hearing on
December 6, 1999.
Mr. Pachul has worked on developing the technical and programming
capacity to launch a TV station--called "Star Ray TV"-- for the
last five years. "I am very pleased that we are now scheduled for a
public hearing," said Pachul today in Toronto. "Independent
producers, grassroots and voluntary organizations, and small businesses
need a venue to express their different viewpoints. Star Ray TV will give
them a voice. Our station will be local, relevant, as well as entertaining."
The application states that 100% of prime time broadcasting will be
Canadian content, with a focus on live, local events. This is good news for
East Toronto sports leagues, neighbourhood associations, and city
councillors interested in better informing residents of current issues.
"Viewers will be able to see their son playing hockey at Ted Reeve
arena, watch their daughter's dance class perform their latest routine,
take in a classic movie, and phone in live to comment on plans for a new
residential development. It's a total package, and there is nothing like it
on TV right now."
Mr. Pachul is currently busy working with volunteers obtaining letters of
support for his initiative. "We have until November 12 to get as many
letters as possible. I want to show the folks in Ottawa that our community
wants its' own TV station, and that we are committed to using it to develop
a new sense of civic pride."
Interested independent producers, non-profit and charitable community
groups, and local residents and businesses can be part of creating this new
station by writing a letter of support addressed to the CRTC.
