My wife and I support this application. 2. We have read all the material Jan has put on his website and it would be nice if every community had such community oriented TV programming. 3. We are particularly supportive because we are both hard of hearing and know that 24% of the adult Canadian population has a diagnosed hearing impairment. Several members of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (Orillia Branch) attended a meeting of the CRTC in Toronto and gave the Commission copies of a national survey funded by the Ministry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, Canada. The report was titled "A survey of the needs of the hard of hearing radio and television consumers in Canada (Mar/92) ." It pleaded with the CRTC to make TV programming more accessible to the hard of hearing (remember 24% of adult Canadians). 4. As far as we can see nothing happened as a result of our presentation with the one exception of Jan Pachul who happened to be present at the same hearing and was fascinated by the survey results. His project may be small but to hard of hearing people in the Toronto East area it will be a godsend. Obviously in Orillia we will never get the signal but the project will at least wave the flag for hearing impaired citizens. Dwight and Ruth Mary Engel ***End of document*** |
